All This And A Rainbow Too

Wednesday, September 22  -  Mesa Verde to Moab, Utah

I found out today that I have no objections to Scenic Routes - provided they are scenic.  And today's route, even though we were on the road 9 hours rather than the originally planned 3, was jaw-droppingly, achingly, mind-blowingly Scenic.  Thanks to Best Husband Ever, we not only took the originally planned detour to the Four Corners area (Utah, Arizona, Colorado and New Mexico), we added the pilgrim route through Monument Valley, the place where a hundred cowboy movies have been made.

And to make things even more spectacular, it was raining as we set out.  There we were in the desert and it was raining.  The monuments were all the more thrilling for their slow reveal.  The weather changed as much as the scenery throughout the day.  The cloud formations were unlike anything I'd ever seen in Brooklyn.

Our good mood lasted the entire day, even through the 45 minute backtrack we had to make to retrieve my left behind sunglasses (new AND prescription) at the Navajo roadside stand where BHE had bought me an exquisite turquoise necklace.  And thank goodness I forgot them and we had to make that extra trip otherwise we would have missed the massive downpour (I'm talking way worse than the tropical storm I drove through in the Smoky Mountains) just before we got to the trailer park and then the sight that greeted us as we pulled in at the end of this wonderful day.  I'm not kidding - it was so perfect we just burst out laughing.

And thanks to Max I now know that you can click on the photos I post if I don't include captions, so I'm going to shut up and let the photos speak for themselves.  This is a chronological sequence as the day unfolded, starting with the Four Corners monument and ending at the Moab Trailer Park outside Canyonlands National Park, Utah.

  2. Thanks, Di - we missed your Super Harvest Moon that night (more desert thunder, rain and lightning) but I saw it in the wee hours - magnificent - and it's shining right now as well. Hope it's shining as brightly for you too.

  3. Celebrated Chinese Moonfest here with neighbors, Louise and Tim. High Winds brought in cloudcover hiding our Moonrise. I asked Louise to call me later in the night if the moon made an appearance through their bedroom window. Thanks to Louise's 3:28 AM call, I didn't miss the Harvest moonset. I watched Luna until she dipped below the western horizon. Happy Harvest Moon!
