I Ain't as Good as I Once Was

Sunday, September 12

Favorite song on the road to Memphis  -   I Ain't As Good As I Once Was.
The chorus goes like this:
I ain't as good as I once was
That's just the cold hard truth
I ain't as good as I once was
But I'm as good once as I ever was.

Toby Keith goes on to apply this pearl to the following situations: being propositioned by twin sisters in a bar, being challenged to a fight in a bar, and a drinking competition...... in a bar, but I think it could be applied to just about any situation, don't you?  It's deep.  Hell, it's poetry for the Boomer Generation.

Favorite billboard on the road to Memphis  -  A tie between the one with the photo of Obama and Chavez shaking hands under the banner:  Stop Socialism.  Vote Republican!

and the somewhat more cryptic: After You Die You Will Meet God

Favorite scene from the road  -  cotton fields.
So low to the ground - no wonder it was back breaking work for slaves
Favorite bit of shameless self promotion  -  The staggered signs on the approach to Hurricane Mills for Loretta Lynn's Museum, Loretta Lynn's Country Store, Loretta Lynn's Theme Park, RV Park, Cabins and Dude Ranch.

Favorite place name  -  Grinders Switch, fictional (but apparently real) home of Minnie Pearl from the Grand Ole Opry.

Favorite food moment -  lunch at Interstate Barbecue in Memphis.

The pulled pork sandwich - piled high with a layer of coleslaw on top and smothered in excellent sauce that almost falls apart in your sticky hands as you eat it - was indeed hog heaven.
And look - they ship anywhere!

We crossed the Mighty Mississippi to Arkansas where we'll be staying for the next two nights.  I never thought I'd say this (hold on to your hat Louise) but this trailer park is fabulous.  We had our doubts as we drove past gas tanks and a pretty depressed suburb to get here but the Tom Sawyer RV Park is simply perfect.  We are facing the river which is maybe 50 feet from us, in a shady spot, and the sites are staggered so our neighbors are not right outside our windows.  We may never leave!
All this, and a pot of tea too!
